A public art form using LED technology to light and outline buildings will debut in downtown Providence when two enormous wide-arched windows—one facing north and one south—at the top of Paolino Properties’ 20-story flagship building at 100 Westminster Street are illuminated at 9 PM on Thursday, June 30.

The 9 PM launching of Illuminating Providence will feature a 15-minute light show choreographed to music.  The show will close with a graphic of the American flag.

Joseph R. Paolino, Jr., managing partner of Paolino Properties, said, “This vibrant and versatile display is Paolino Properties’ contribution to public art in downtown Providence.  I’ve been intrigued and impressed by the use of LED technology to reshape the skylines of major cities and am thrilled to utilize that technology to light up 100 Westminster.  The Providence skyline has been dim, and even dark, for far too long.  The lights were turned off at the Superman Building next door at about the same time I bought 100 Westminster.  It’s time to illuminate our city at night.”

ILLUMINATING PROVIDENCE

The goal of Illuminating Providence is to enhance the skyline of downtown Providence by creating an art piece or display that consists of choreographed light shows, dynamic effects, and static colors that begin every day at sunset.  Thanks to the integrated astronomical clock in the Pharos controller, the system automatically adjusts its start time every day to allow for

worry-free operations.

“We can program and customize any variety of light shows,” Paolino said.  “We’ll have the American flag and patriotic images for the Fourth of July.  There’s unlimited possibilities we can employ to distinguish our business and, at the same time, convey the message that downtown Providence is open for business.  Providence is a major city.  When Paolino Properties undertakes major renovations in the near future at 150 Washington Street, 76 Dorrance Street, and 30 Kennedy Plaza we will illuminate those buildings as well.  Let’s light up Providence and light the path to making our city America’s best.”

Paolino said that 100 Westminster will be illuminated every night from sunset to sunrise, while light shows will take place on holidays and on special occasions.  “Most buildings fade away during the night,” Paolino said.  “At 100 Westminster, we are maximizing the architectural experience.”

About 100 Westminster Street

100 Westminster, built in 1983, was designed by the internationally acclaimed firm of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (now HOK).  The 400,000 square-foot signature building, purchased by Joseph R. Paolino, Jr. in 2014, features Class A office space with retail space on the first floor.  The rose-colored granite and emerald green glass create an architecturally distinct building that exhibits an aura of quality and prestige.
