H.P. Lovecraft used the Halsey House as the basis for the home of the title character in his short novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.

Joseph R. Paolino, Jr., managing partner of Paolino Properties, a real estate holding company, today announced that Paolino Properties has closed on the acquisition of Halsey House, located at 140 Prospect Street, Providence.

Built in 1801 by Colonel Thomas Lloyd Halsey (1751-1838), a prominent and prosperous Providence shipping merchant and a French consular agent in Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War, Halsey House is a 10,822 square foot Federal-style brick mansion.  Situated on a corner lot in the heart of the historic East Side, Halsey House is one of the rare residential properties in Providence occupying an acre of prime real estate.  The acreage, lush plantings, fountain and a small pond create a private and relaxing environment in the capital city.

Paolino said he will renovate the mansion’s spacious apartments in order to more fully integrate the property’s magnificent historic details with top-of-the-line modern amenities and state-of-the-art conveniences.

“The renovations I undertake to what I view as one of the East Side’s most splendid properties,” Paolino said, “will be fully in line with maintaining the elegance and grandeur of Halsey House.”
