Joseph R. Paolino has an extensive background in property development, real estate management and overall economic development. He is the third-generation owner and managing partner of Paolino Properties. For over fifty years, Mr. Paolino has held numerous positions in the family owned and operated business. He manages the day-to-day operation of this diverse real estate firm including personnel, sales, maintenance, construction, and development.
As the father of three children and the grandfather of six, Mr. Paolino has been active in both the business sector and the community. He is a graduate of the New York Military Academy, Cornwall, NY and a 1952 graduate of Providence College. His daughter, Donna, and son, Joe Jr., are actively involved in the operations of the company.
Under his direction, Paolino Properties has extended its holdings throughout Rhode Island, to other states, and recently, to other countries. The firm has also expanded its base to include office buildings, industrial parks, shopping centers, apartment complexes, retail centers, marinas, and resort properties. In addition to his other duties, Mr. Paolino also directs the financial planning and management of the firm.
Joseph R. Paolino is a past member of the RI Coastal Resources Management Corp. (appointed by the Governor of RI) and has been a member of the Providence Zoning Board. Mr. Paolino also served as a director and/or advisor to several RI banks including the First Bank & Trust, the former Columbus National Bank, and the former RI Hospital Trust Bank. His affiliations include the Providence Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Providence Board of Realtors, the National Association of Realtors, and the RI Auctioneers’ Association.
A fourth generation Paolino, Joseph R. Paolino, Jr., has his vision on the future. Holding broker's licenses in several states, his primary focus is on development and acquisitions for Paolino Properties.
Mr. Paolino has over twenty years of experience in the Rhode Island government and business sectors. Following his election in 1984 through January 1991, Joseph R. Paolino Jr., served as the youngest elected mayor of the City of Providence. As Mayor, he was responsible for the administration of a $250 million municipal budget, which included all city departments, the school system, public safety, and a workforce of 5000. His economic development efforts during his tenure as Mayor included the American Express Service Center, the RI Convention Center, and the Westin Hotel as well as the nationally known Providence Place Mall.
In 1991, Mr. Paolino was appointed the Director of Economic Development and Tourism, where he became responsible for RI's overall economic development and the implementation of economic strategies and program initiatives. He successfully worked to transform “Downcity” Providence into an academic center. Notably, he also concentrated the state resources toward the development of the Quonset/North Kingstown Rhode Island Port and Industrial Park including new rail and highway systems.
After serving numerous years in the City of Providence and State of Rhode Island, Joseph R. Paolino, Jr. was appointed United States Ambassador to the Republic of Malta by President William Clinton. In 1996, he joined Paolino Properties on a full-time basis. Mr. Paolino is a graduate of Roger Williams University and Harvard University.
